New Law for the Road

8/16/2010 11:00:00 AM

There is a new law for motorists to abide by these days, commonly referred to as the Move Over Law.

This law, valid in every state except Maryland, New York and Hawaii, does differ depending on which state you are in.
This law was adopted to increase safety for those who are stationary along the road.

Here in California, the law declares that upon approaching a stationary authorized vehicle (tow truck, department of transportation vehicle or police/CHP vehicles) with warning lights on, the driver must switch lanes (to the lane that is not directly next to the stopped vehicle). If this maneuver is unsafe, the driver must slow to a reasonable speed.

Any violation of this law is punishable by a fee of up to $50.
