Your Teen Behind the Wheel

Out on the road, there are a lot of potential hazards. Weather conditions, traffic, other automobiles and the drivers behind those automobiles are all elements to be aware of. When it comes to teaching a teen how to drive, many parents strap on their seat belts and hold on tight wishing they could skip the step all together.

It is true that new drivers are more likely to have accidents. This is because of their lack of experience and sometimes lack of understanding of all of the rules of the road. As a parent, you can help teach your young driver to be safe on the road. To help you get ready for the first lesson and guide you through the education process, here are some general tips for teaching teens how to drive.

- Know the rules of the road and practice what you preach. By knowing the law and practicing it, you set an example for your young driver. You can find new drivers books at the DMV and maybe even learn about some new laws you were not aware of. Teens are more likely to repeat the behavior they are exposed to, so by making sure you are following the rules too you can help push your teen in the right direction.

- Start in a parking lot. Having the first lesson off of the open road allows for the new driver to gain comfort and confidence with the vehicle, while keeping them and others out of danger.

- Give them time. Allowing your teen to practice under your supervision will ensure that they are ready when it comes time to take the licensing test. Though it may be scary at first, you ultimately want your teen to be a good, safe driver and practice makes perfect, right?
